Shared Nobel Prizes in Literature: A rare fact



The Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded every year by the Swedish Academy, Stockholm, Sweden. It is awarded to an author who has produced, "in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction” (Excerpt from the will of Alfred Nobel).

Since 1901 to 2011, 108 individuals have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Out of which it happened only on four occasions when
Nobel prize in literature has been shared between two authors. It is a rare phenomenon compared to the rest 5 fields i.e. Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Economics, and Peace.

The four occasions when Nobel prize in literature has been shared between two individuals are as follows:

1) Nobel Prize in literature(1904):
First of all it happened in 1904 when Frédéric Mistral(France) and
José Echegaray y Eizaguirre(Spain) were awarded Nobel prize in literature jointly.

2) Next time in 1917 Nobel prize in loterature was shared between Karl Gjellerup(Denmark) and Henrik Pontoppidan(Denmark).

3) And on third time it was divided equally between Shmuel Yosef Agnon in 1966. Shmuel Yosef Agnon belonged to Israel while Nelly Sachs was a resigent of Sweden.

4) The last time Nobel prize in literature were shared in 1974. It was divided equally between Eyvind Johnson and Harry Martinson (both from Sweden).
